Sphiwe Emmanuel Mhlongo

Sphiwe Emmanuel Mhlongo is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Science, Engineering, and Agriculture of the University of Venda (UNIVEN). He joined academia in 2009 through the lecturer support program of the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA). Over the years, he taught several modules in mining and environmental geology and contributed to the successful supervision of 10 MSc students. He is currently co-promoting 3 Ph.D. candidates. His research interest is on sustainable mining, mine closure and rehabilitation, and environmental geology. He has co-authored numerous papers published in scholarly journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings. Most of his published work is on the characterization of abandoned mine sites and developing tools for prioritization and management of rehabilitation of abandoned mines. He was the Co-chairperson of the organizing committee of the First International Conference in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources held in Polokwane in 2018. He served as a reviewer for several national and international scholarly journals. He strongly believes in using research to solve the problems faced by rural communities. Because of this, he participates in several community engagement projects aimed at developing rural communities.
